Often referred to by those who don’t know exactly what they are as “glowing rock lamps”, genuine Himalayan Salt lamps like you find here at the Himalayan Salt Boutique are acutally made of a solid Pink Salt crystal. Artisians carefully drill a whole into the bottom of the salt crystal, and install a natural wood base to hold and secure the bulb assembly in place. When the lamp is turned on the bulb glows from within the salt crystal to produce an earthy, smooth glow. And that is how Himalayan Salt Lamps are made.

The salt for these enchanting lamps comes from and ancient sea bed that dried up long ago. This salt bed now resides deep under the foothills of the Himalayas in Pakistan. Genuine Himalayan Salt Lamps can easily absorb moisture in a humid climate. This can happen, even inside your home.  Like all salt, it will take in moisture from the surrounding air and can become quite wet. As in, water litterally running off of it as if it has been placed in the shower for a few minutes. While this is normal, it can have a negative affect on your lamp and possibly even ruin it for use as the lamp can litterally disolve. It can also be a hazard. Fortunately, it is easy to avoid, and easy to fix if your lamp does get wet.

Leaving your salt lamp turned on at all times will help ensure that it does not absorb moisture. This is because the heat will keep the lamp dried out. It is also recommended for optimal negative ion output. However, if you need to turn your lamp off, or perfer not to have it on at all times, you can simply cover it with a plastic bag when it is not in use. Make sure that the bag completely covers the lamp, tucking it under the wood base to secure the bag so that moist air cannot reach it. This way your lamp cannot absorb moisture when you leave it off. When you want to use your lamp, simply uncover it, turn it on, and enjoy the enchanting glow!

In the event that your salt lamp does get wet, unplug the lamp and use a towel to pad the excess water off of the lamp. You can also use a hair dryer to dry the lamp. Either way make sure to dry it out to the point where it is safe to turn on. (No water dripping from it, not wet to the touch to the point where your finger gets wet when you touch it.) Then simply turn the lamp on and leave it on until it is completely dry. Be sure to cover your lamp the next time you turn it off, as described above, to avoid it getting wet again. If you leave your lamp uncovered and turned off in a humid climate it is best to unplug it. But as we said, it can still disolve if it gets wet, so it is best not to let this happen.

*Warning: Never operate a salt lamp that has absorbed excess moisture. Unplug the lamp immediately and allow it to dry, or dry it using the instructions above, before use.

It is very easy to replace or install your Himalayan Salt Lamp bulb. All of our lamps include an easy to remove bulb assembly that simply clips into the wooden base housing. Follow the instructions below to install or replace your Salt Lamp Bulb:

1. Simply unplug your lamp and lay it gently on it’s side. (We recommend laying the lamp on something soft, like a towel or blanket.)
2. Locate the bulb assembly in the wooden housing at the base of the lamp.
3. Carefully squeeze the clips on either side of the bulb assembly and gently remove it from the wood base housing.
4. Replace the existing bulb or insert a bulb for the first time. Sqeeze the clips once again and carefully re-insert the bulb assembly back into the wooden base housing.
5. Once the bulb assembly is in place release the clips to fix the assembly in place.
6. Carefully turn the lamp right-side up again, making sure the cord fits into the groove on the bottom of the base so the lamp sits flat on the surface you place it on. (Make sure that the lamp base comes to rest level on the surface you are placing your lamp on. If the cord is not resting in the groove so that the lamp base is level, your lamp will not set flat and be secure.) 
7. Plug the lamp cord back in and turn the lamp on to test the bulb.

*Attention: Always check your cord to ensure that it is in good working order; never use a cord that has been damaged. If your cord has been damaged be sure to replace it. You can purchase replacement cords/bulb assembly here…
