What is a Himalayan Salt Lamp?
What is a Himalayan Salt Lamp? Himalayan Salt Lamps are beautiful, functional works of art created entirely out of Himalayan Salt Crystals.
Himalayan Salt, mined from ancient sea salt beds located deep within the Himalayan Mountains, has not been exposed to modern environmental pollutants. Though obviously not traditionally used to make lamps, this innovative new use of the salt crystals requires hand crafting. Artisans begin by selecting a crystal and drilling a hole in the bottom. The crystal is then mounted on a wood base with a corresponding hole in the center that allows a bulb to be inserted through the base and into the lamp. When lit, the bulb warms the lamp, which creates air ionizing effects, while lighting the semitransparent salt crystal from within.
Himalayan Salt Lamp Uses
Himalayan Salt Lamps lend a relaxing ambiance to any room with their earthy, smooth glow. These lamps are perfect for use in any room of the home. The light from a Himalayan Salt Lamp is emotionally uplifting and the negative ions produced by salt lamps may also help to reduce irritability and depression, especially during the winter months when there are fewer hours of sunlight.
Himalayan Salt Lamps are also used by hotels, restaurants, spas, resorts, and massage therapy clinics worldwide to add emotionally uplifting and calming effects to their establishments for their patron’s enjoyment. You can enjoy this same uplifting ambiance as well by placing these beautiful lamps around your home or office!

Coloring
The color of the light emitted by a salt lamp depends on the coloring of the salt crystal used to make the lamp. The coloring of Himalayan Salt ranges from pale, peach/pink to dark shades of red, and is caused by the varying amounts of iron contained in the crystal. The more iron contained in the crystal, the darker the shade of red becomes.
Shapes
The crystals used to make the lamps are either left in their natural crystal form, for Natural Himalayan Salt Crystal Lamps, or hand carved into various shapes before being fitting with a base. The various shapes include animals, flowers, or, the most well-known form, the “Fire Bowl”, “Bowl of Fire” or “Abundance Bowl” Lamp. Bowl lamps are carved into a bowl or vase shape which is then filled with chunks of Himalayan Salt. Animal shaped salt lamps include dolphins, elephants and turtles, and are popular lighting for children’s rooms. The Natural Crystal forms of Himalayan Salt Lamps range in size from 3-4lbs to larger lamps up to 100lbs or more, which incidentally creates quite the eye catching piece as you can imagine!
